Mallikarjun Jyotirlinga is located in Srisailam, Andhra Pradesh. It is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas and is a very ancient place of worship for followers of Lord Shiva.
This is the most unique among all Jyotirlingas because both Lord Shiva and Mata Parvati are present here.
Mallikarjuna is composed of two words in which the meaning of Mallika means
Maa Parvati and Arjuna means Lord Shiva.
Another important of Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga is that it is also in the 275th Paadal Paitra Places. Paadal Paitra place is those
places which are dedicated to Lord Shiva. These temples have been described in verses in Shaiva Nayansar, which have been described
as the most important places of the 6th and 7th centuries.
Mallikarjuna is one of the 52 Shaktipeeths. When Lord Shiva took the body of his wife Sati into the entire universe with the body
of his wife, then the body parts of Sati body were cut off by Sudarshan, which had fallen to 52 places. These places are known as
Shakti Peeth. It is said that the upper part of Sati's lips was dropped in Mallikarjuna. Hence this place is more important for
Hindus.
There are many stories and legends about Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga's Kavadanti Mallikarjuna Jyotirling, some of which are
as follows: This story is mentioned in the 15th chapter of the Kotirudhar Samhita in Shiv Purana. Once Lord Shiva and
Mata Parvati decided that they would choose the right bride for their sons. Now there is the debate who will marry first.
Lord Shiva suggested that whichever revolve around the whole world, there will be first marriage.
The story related to Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga in Purana is as follows- Once the two sons of Shiva-Parvati Kartikeya and Ganesha
started quarreling for marriage. Kartikeya said that they are big, so their marriage should be first, but Shri Ganesh wanted to
get married earlier. Both of them reached their parents to decide the dispute. His parents said that in the two of you who will
come here before the orbiting the earth, the marriage of that will be the first.
Upon hearing the condition, Kartikeya ji ran to revolve the earth. Here Shree Ganesh Ji and his vehicle were also rats, so how
could they rotate so quickly? There was a huge problem in front of Ganesha. Shree Ganesha is definitely very gross with the
body, but they are the ocean of intelligence. He had some thoughts and urged his mother Parvati and father Devadhadev Maheshwar
to sit on a seat. After sitting on the seat of both of them, Sraghnaesh conducted his seven parikramas, and then duly worshiped
the priest.
In this way, Shri Ganesh became the officer of Parikrama to get the fruits attained by Parikrama of the Earth. Seeing their clever
intellect, both Shiva and Parvati were very pleased and they also married Srgarnesh. At the time Swami Kartikeya came back after
completing the whole earth, at that time, the marriage of Shree Ganesh Ji was done with the accomplishments and riddhi of Vishwaroop
Prajapati. Not only this, Shri Ganesha had also met the two sons of 'Sage' from his wife named 'Siddhi' and 'Benefits' from a wife
named Riddhi. The traveler and the welfare of the world, Devshi Narad, told Swami Kartikeya this whole story. Swami Kartikeya got
upset after hearing the news of Srgarnesh and son's benefit. Angry with this episode, Kartik followed the courtesy and touched the
feet of his parents and walked from there.
After separating from parents, Kartik started living on the Mount Crunch. Shiva and Parvati sent their son Kartikeya to
Kolluparvarvat to explain Devshi Narada to explain. Devshi Narada tried to persuade Swami in many ways, but they did not
come back. After this gentle gentle mother, Parvati became disturbed in the affection of the son. They reached the Crunch
Mountains with Lord Shiva.
Here Swami Kartikeya got the information about the arrival of his parents in Kronchand
Mountains and they went from there to three planes ie Chhattis Kms. On the departure of Kartikeya, Lord Shiva became
known as Jyotirlinga on that Crowch Mount, since then he became famous as 'Mallikarjuna Jyothirling'. 'Mallika' is the name
of Mother Parvati, while 'Arjun' is called Lord Shankar. In this way, the name 'Mallikarjuna' has become famous in the world of
Jyotirlinga.
Another story -
According to another Story , it was the capital of a king named Chandragupta in the vicinity of Kaunch Mountains. His princess was
entangled in some crisis. To escape from that calamity, he ran away from his father's palace and came to the refuge of Parvaraj.
She used to eat candles and drink milk with the girl Gwalos. In this way, his life-giving was started on that mountain. The girl
had a Shyama (black) cow, she used to serve herself.
The strange incident happened with that cow. One person used to take out the
milk of that Shyama day after day. One day, the girl saw a thief milking the milk of a Shyama, then he got angry in anger and ran
to kill him. When he reached near Gaau, there was no surprise for him, because there he could not see anything except a Shivalinga.
Later, the princess made a beautiful temple on top of that Shivalinga. The same ancient Shivling is known today as
"Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga".
